About

I have been a vegetable farmer since 2008, and before that I was wwoofing for many years. In 2014 I bought a beautiful farm, located in a river valley 50km S-E of Bergen. I am very excited to own a farm after renting land for many years!
My goal is to have a community on the farm, with many houses, and also to plant 1 hectare (2 acres) of fruit trees starting in 2017 -18. My farm operation has been certified organic since 2008.

There is vegetable growing in the season from May to October. There is also sustainable meat production with 75 sheep of traditional breed ( Old Norse Sheep / Villsau). The vegetables and the meat are sold to an independent food co-operative, and to restaurants in Bergen from June to October.

THE FARM WORK:
We work monday to friday, approximately seven hours each day. This is the main work:
1) There is work every week with the VEGETABLE crops. This year we will grow lettuce and many different salad greens; early potatoes, white and red onions; broccoli, cauliflower, cabbages, kale; carrot, beetroot, courgettes (zucchini) and squashes, sweet corn and culinary herbs. I also grow small amounts of speciality vegetables.
2) BUILDING a barn to store hay and making timber. I have a saw mill to make building materials with trees from our forest. People who want to work with timber and carpentry and working with natural stones are extra welcome this year!
3) In middle of June and again in August we are MAKING HAY to use as winter feed for the sheep. This takes a whole week of hard work.
4) MAKING FOOD. We mill grains and bake all the bread ourselves. We also make yoghurt and kefir with local milk, and sometimes fresh cheeses. In August and in autumn we start making many pickles, jams, sauerkraut, beer, chutneys. We also preserve some fish and meat from our farm. The farm is normally self sufficient on vegetables, herbs, berries, fish and meat.
5) SHEPHERDING. Lambs are born in the sheep barn in April and early May. The sheep are in the valley in May to early June, then they go up to the mountain at 500-800 meters (1500-2500 feet) altitude. We bring the sheep down from the mountain in September and October. So most of the work with sheep is in spring and autumn.
6) General farm work: You can learn to work with many specialised hand tools as well as farm tractors,, and to make fences and gates, learn about compost and soil fertility, and making permaculture beds for herbs and fruit trees.

LIVING TOGETHER:
* We eat breakfast, lunch and dinner together. There is a big communal living area, and everybody has a private bedroom.
*All adults on the farm contribute equally to the daily house tasks like cooking and cleaning the communal areas.
* It is REALLY IMPORTANT to me that you have some skills and motivation for living together and contributing to the team spirit! My minimum goal is to have a safe and compassionate space. I will be very happy if you can also contribute to cultivating a lifestyle that supports a harmonious, energized body and a peaceful mind. I don't like living with people who are addicted to artificial stimulants, or to alcohol, nicotine, coffee or sugary foods. Then it's best if you go to another farm. I have absolutely no problem with recreational use of coffee., sugar, alcohol etc (But there is a no smoking policy on the farm area).
* I am also studying and trying to practise empathy and non-violent power in the spirit of Gandhi and Marshall Rosenberg. Anybody who can share or encourage this practise, is especially welcome.
*There is no TV, radio, newspapers or other consumerist propaganda. But there are lots of interesting books and magazines, guitars, and an office with computers+internet.

SOME PRACTICAL INFO:
*There is normally three or four volunteers at a time.
*Minimum stay is three weeks for people who have experience with farming or building, and one month for people with less experience.
*The farm is in a remote valley. There are other houses and farms here, but there is no village. The nearest villages are Holdhus (10km away) and Eikelandsosen (15 km away), where there are local buses every day to Bergen (70 km away).
* I have a very cuddly farm cat that comes into the house during day time, so it is not good if you are very allergic to cats.

Thanks for reading! I hope this information was useful. Don't hesitate to ask questions if you are curious!

Best regards,
Erik
